New Zebra Crossing Announced for Canvey

Essex County Council has announced plans to build a zebra crossing at a danger site on Canvey Island.

The proposed zebra crossing will be built on Mitchells Avenue, Canvey, just south of the junction with Smallgains Avenue.

It comes after local residents launched a petition following a fatal accident at the site. Construction work will start once detailed designs have been completed.

Cllr Howard, Essex County Council Deputy Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport and Chairman of the Castle Point Local Highways Panel that will fund the scheme, welcomed the plans.

He said: “I’m convinced this is a very good use of the limited funds available. Residents were very concerned for the safety of people who need to cross the road, and the zebra crossing will be an important improvement.”

The positive news comes just weeks after residents hailed road improvements on the island, including the resurfacing Furtherwick Road.

Local residents were critical at first, objecting to the disruption, noise and inconvenience but came round after seeing the finished results.

Cllr Howard continued: “I have had conversations with residents telling me they think the new surface is a great improvement.

“I think the road will serve us well for years to come. One gentleman from Neighbourhood Watch wrote to me saying, ‘The men seemed to work as a team without fuss, the result being a first class job and everyone pleased. A big pat on the back to the workers and also our Highways team.”
