Article 4 Directions

An Article 4 Direction is a statement made by the local planning authority that restricts the scope of permitted development rights. An Article 4 Direction can apply to a particular area or site, or a particular type of development anywhere in the authority’s area.

There are currently four locations within the Borough with an Article 4 Direction:

Florence Gardens

The Direction provides protection for the design and architectural approaches in a conservation area, it serves to preserve 25 houses built by the Salvation Army in the 1930's.

South Benfleet

The Direction provides protection for the design and architectural approaches in a conservation area, it serves to preserve the Old Village Centre, Victorian Development, Public Open Space and Railway Station with associated transport links.

Coombe Wood

The Direction provides further protection for the woodland area to prevent yet more fences or walls being erected and prevents the introduction of trailers, caravans or mobile homes.

Northern Section of Coombe Wood

The Direction provides further protection for the woodland area to prevent yet more fences or walls being erected and prevents the introduction of trailers, caravans or mobile homes.

Restrictions on Individual Properties

It is possible that individual properties have had their permitted development rights restricted, whether this be from initial construction or through extending and/or altering the original dwelling.
