Council approves new facilities and Council housing at meeting

Following a meeting of the Council’s Development Management Committee on Tuesday 6 August, Councillors agreed to green light the installation of two free to use outdoor sport facilities at John Burrows Recreation Ground.

The new facilities will include a brand-new table tennis table and a pétanque court at the park, both funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

Also approved at the meeting was the construction of three 1-bedroom properties on a currently disused site on Linden Way, Canvey Island. The approval of the development continues the Council’s ambition to provide more accommodation for people on the housing waiting list.

Deputy Leader of the Council and Portfolio Holder for Strategic Planning, Cllr Warren Gibson commented on the outcome of the meeting, saying:

“The Council understands the importance of having a variety of sport and play facilities across our Borough and we are pleased that the new installations at John Burrows Recreation Ground can go ahead, providing positive additional contributions to the existing facilities already available.”

Speaking on the approval of the construction of new housing, Cllr Gibson said:

“Around 34% of households on the waiting list in Castle Point are in need of the type of accommodation approved at the meeting.

"This is a great opportunity to increase supply of smaller properties in addition to larger two and three bedroom properties that have been granted and constructed over the preceding years.”
