The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government have confirmed that the Long-Term Plan for Towns programme will be retained and reformed, as part of a new regeneration programme.

The government have confirmed that Canvey Island will receive of up to £20 million of funding and support over the next decade, giving communities the space and resource to build their vision for renewal and target the root causes of deprivation.

This reformed programme will bring together residents, business and community representatives to drive forward the change they want to see. The government is due to issue revised guidance for the funding shortly, after which the programme will start.

Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of the Council, said:

‘It is reassuring to have confirmation that the government’s Long-Term Plan for Towns programme is to continue, and that Canvey Island will benefit from the investment of up to £20 million over the next decade.

“The Council have been working with communities already to set up the Towns Board to oversee this investment, and we await further detail on the reforms of the programme indicated by the Government.”
