Residents could bolster their homes with flood protection measures

Eligible residents could bolster their homes with flood protection measures

Essex homes currently at risk of rainfall flooding have been revealed as Essex County Council offers residents thousands of pounds in protective measures.

The Environment Agency data collated by Essex County Council comes as East Anglia saw its wettest February since records began, while England saw its eighth wettest winter.

Rainfall flooding, also called surface water or pluvial flooding, is caused by excessive rainfall which overwhelms drainage systems.

In Castle Point 1,157 residential properties have been identified with 1% annual risk.

The data is based on flood risk today and does not factor in future climate change allowances, which are set to further increase the number of residential properties at risk.

The Net Zero: Making Essex Carbon Neutral report shows the number of Essex homes at risk of flooding could double by 2050.

Essex homeowners can check their property’s flood risk online to see if they are able to apply for the PFR grant. This may include residents living in critical drainage areas.

Homeowners will be asked to contribute to their flood protection measures if they exceed the £8,000 afforded by the grant.

Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council, said:

‘The Council welcomes the news from Essex County Council, that eligible residents can access funding of up to £8,000 for flood protection measures through the Property Flood Resilience (PFR) grant.

This grant will enable eligible residents to take necessary steps to help safeguard their homes from rainfall flooding risk. Environment Agency data, collated by Essex County Council, has identified 1,157 residential properties in Castle Point with a 1% annual risk.

We would encourage all Castle Point residents to check their property’s flood risk online to see if they are eligible to apply for the PFR grant. The link to do so is flood.essex.gov.uk
