Statement on Taxpayers’ Alliance annual ‘rich list’

Following recent coverage in the media in relation to the Taxpayers’ Alliance annual ‘rich list’ please see the statement below.
Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: “All redundancy settlements are handled in full accordance with our agreed standard redundancy procedures and our legal obligations.
“The reported figure includes pension contributions and other components of the redundancy package provided under our contractual terms. Every element of the arrangement was determined using the same rules applicable to any employee in a redundancy situation.
“We are committed to being open and transparent and have already published details in our statement of accounts. Details of the redundancy payments as part of the Council’s transformation programme in July 2023 are also available on our website.”
Note: The £565,000 paid to Chris Mills in 2023/24 is broken down as follows:
Salary: £73,000
PRP and other one-off payments: £6,000
Compensation for loss of office: £469,000*
Employer’s pension: £17,000
*The £469k is broken down as £112.5k for redundancy payments to the individual and £356.5k for pension strain paid to Essex Pension Fund.
Note: The £339,000 paid to Andrew Smith in 2023/24 is broken down as follows:
Salary: £80,000
PRP and other one-off payments: £6,000
Compensation for loss of office: £236,000*
Employer’s pension: £17,000
*The £236k is broken down as £112.5k for redundancy payments to the individual and £123.5k for pension strain paid to Essex Pension Fund.
