Scheduled Ancient Monuments (SAM) are recognized as being of great national significance and are afforded legal protection under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.
As such, any proposed development that may have an impact on a SAM is carefully reviewed, with English Heritage playing a key role in providing expert commentary and recommendations on such proposals. It is also crucial to understand that any planning application which directly affects a SAM requires the applicant to secure a Scheduled Monument Consent, a specific legal requirement designed to ensure that these historically valuable sites are preserved and safeguarded for future generations.
More information on Scheduled Monument Consent can be found on the Historic England website.
