Council officers visited Canvey Lake this morning along with specialist contractors. The contractors carried out treatment works as planned.
The aerator was operating but was not functioning correctly due to lower water levels and a build-up of debris. This issue has now been resolved. Further blockages may occur until water levels recover and we will continue to monitor it.
A number of dead fish have been removed from the lake. During this morning's inspection, there did not appear to have been any significant increase in fish losses. However, a large number of fish were observed gathering near the aerator, which is consistent with the low oxygen levels often associated with prolonged hot and dry weather.
These conditions are being experienced in water bodies across many parts of the country following recent heatwave and drought conditions. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and are following the advice of our specialists and partners including the Environment Agency.
