Council officers attended Canvey Lake this morning to assess conditions on site and noted a slight improvement compared with recent days due to a drop in temperature.
However, with temperatures forecast to increase again next week, there remains a risk of further fish losses and we continue to monitor the situation closely. Our contractor continues to visit the lake to remove dead fish, where they are accessible at the time of visit, and to check the site.
We remain in regular contact with the Environment Agency and are seeking their ongoing advice and support. Unfortunately, at this stage, no alternative short-term solutions have been identified that would help address the situation. The Environment Agency has confirmed that similar impacts are being felt at lakes and water bodies around the region due to the drought and prolonged heatwaves.
We have also contacted Essex County Fire and Rescue Service to explore whether they may be able to assist. We have the required permissions in place should support be available, however, we are aware of the demands on the Fire Service during the heatwave. The Lake covers a large area and the additional water would need to be substantial to make any meaningful difference. For these reasons this may mean it is not possible.
