A new future planned for historic Solby House
A new future planned for historic Solby House
Cabinet Members have agreed to apply to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government to transfer Solby House in Hadleigh from its Housing Revenue Account into the General Fund. This important step would allow the building to be repurposed, creating new opportunities for local residents and visitors. The proposal is subject to approval by the Secretary of State.
Solby House is a late 18th‑century country house with a long history of serving the community. Purchased by the former Benfleet Urban District Council in 1936, it has been used over the decades as accommodation for elderly residents and, more recently, as temporary housing. The last tenancy ended in June 2025 and the building has since been secured.
Given its location in the heart of John Burrows Park, Cabinet members believe the site is better suited to supporting leisure and recreational activities rather than housing. The building is structurally sound but requires renovation to repurpose it.
Cllr Warren Gibson, Deputy Leader of Castle Point Borough Council, said: "I have been fighting to get something done on this site since I was first elected. It is fantastic to see real progress being made and I am determined that Solby House will finally be put to use in a way that benefits the whole community."
Councillor Rob Lillis, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Housing said: "Solby House has a proud history in Hadleigh and this decision ensures it will continue to serve our community. By repurposing the building, we could provide facilities that enhance the park such as a café, toilets, or spaces for clubs, school visits, and community groups."
Options under consideration include:
- A café and public toilets to support park visitors
- A museum, archive, or learning centre for schools
- Meeting spaces for local clubs and community groups
This transformation is part of the Council’s commitment to improving leisure facilities and making Castle Point’s parks more welcoming and functional for everyone.
