Additional funding awarded to support Wyvern Community Transport
Castle Point Borough Council has approved an additional £11,600 grant to Wyvern Community Transport to help secure the future of its vital community service for the 2026/27 financial year.
Wyvern Community Transport, a registered charity, provides essential door to door transport for residents across Castle Point, enabling people, particularly those who are vulnerable, isolated, or without access to transport, to attend appointments, activities and community services that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Wyvern recently confirmed it had been informed by its principal funder, Essex County Council, that its grant for 2026/27 will be its final year of support. The loss of this significant income means the charity must identify new funding sources to maintain and stabilise its operations.
In response, Wyvern approached Castle Point Borough Council for support to help manage cashflow and maintain service continuity during this critical period. The additional £11,600 grant, alongside its existing annual Council funding of £10,000, will help the charity continue providing its service while it works to strengthen its long term financial sustainability.
Cllr Russ Savage, Portfolio Holder for People and Communities said: “We are disappointed that Essex County Council can no longer fund this deserving charity after the next financial year. We recognise the vital role Wyvern Community Transport plays in reducing social isolation, supporting independent living and connecting residents who otherwise face significant transport barriers which is why we are stepping in to support them.”
June Lumley, Chair of Trustees for at Wyvern Community Transport said: “We are very grateful to Castle Point Borough Council for this additional funding. It comes at a crucial time for our charity as we work to secure our long term future. For many of our passengers, Wyvern is more than transport — it is a lifeline that keeps them connected, independent and able to attend essential appointments. This support helps ensure we can continue to be there for the residents who rely on us most.”
