Introduction

Castle Point Borough Council ("the Council") have designed a Council Housing Water Safety Policy with the safety of our tenants at the core.

A safety first approach

The Council will maintain an up-to-date record of the water services that require regular flushing and temperature checks at various points, and cleaning/descaling of showerheads. The Council will carry out the checks we need to and store the evidence on our IT system.

I’m a tenant - am I safe from the risk of illness caused by water borne bacteria?

The most common illness caused by water borne bacteria is legionella, this presents a very low risk to most people, however
If you are a smoker and over the age of 45, or if you are 60+ and leave your home unoccupied for 2 weeks or more, you need to contact the Council to arrange for a contractor to attend and carry out a flush to your home, on or shortly before you come home.
Or
If you have a chronic condition like respiratory or kidney disease and diabetes and leave your home unoccupied for 2 weeks or more, need to contact the Council to arrange for a contractor to attend and carry out a flush to your home, on or shortly before you come home.
Or
If you are alcohol dependent or misuse substances and leave your home unoccupied for 2 weeks or more, need to contact the Council to arrange for a contractor to attend and carry out a flush to your home, on or shortly before you come home. Please contact us to request a water flush by
